A home destroyed by Cyclone Amphan in Bangladesh

It is not those who say to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in heaven.
MATTHEW 7:21

In today’s gospel, Jesus tells his story to emphasise how important it is not just to listen to his word, but also to act on it.

If we do not act on his word, we are like the foolish person who builds their house on the sand. We will not be able to stand up against adversity; we will be washed away by the tide of all that challenges us. Whether that is something in our personal life or whether that is the difficulties we see in our world today – a world filled with poverty, conflict, inequality and prejudice.

And so, we spend time reflecting on what it is we are being called to do. We listen to God’s word, and we think about what it means for how we live our lives today.

How do we keep the commandments to love God and one another? How can we care for our world, and for our sisters and brothers who are vulnerable, no matter where they are? How do we speak up for what we know is right and stand firm in the face of the storms of opposition that we might face?

Advent prayer

God our Father,
guide us to do your will,
to stand firm in our faith
and to love you and one another
as we seek the kingdom of heaven.
Amen.
