Kanika in Bangladesh surrounded by her pigeons and doves
By the tender mercy of our God who from on high will bring the rising Sun to visit us, to give light to those who live in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
John the Baptist’s father, Zechariah, is filled with the Holy Spirit and delivers a prophecy, speaking of the role his son will play in preparing a way for the one who is to come. A Messiah who will bring light to the darkness and will guide us towards peace.
When we look at our world today, we can see that we are still much in need of the light and peace of Christ.
Too many people have been forced to flee their homes because of conflict. Too many people are facing hunger, poverty and injustice, like those we have met through our Advent reflections: Mariam, Zein, Fatima, Laila and Samir in Lebanon; Lizbeth in Peru; Leydi in Guatemala, and so many others.
As we draw ever nearer to the birth of Christ, Prince of Peace and Light of the World, we reflect on how we can build peace and strengthen hope through our actions, both in our local community and for our global family.
On Christmas Eve, we pray that we may work alongside our brothers and sisters to create a world which better reflects God’s kingdom of mercy and peace.
Merciful God,
guide our feet in the way of peace
and lead us all to reflect your love and mercy
in all we do,
as we come together
to celebrate the birth of your Son with joy.
Amen.
