In today’s psalm, peace and justice go hand in hand. In our world today, where true and lasting peace seems to slip further and further away, this is something that we need to remember. While there is still injustice, conflict will inevitably continue, with the dreadful impact that this has on us all.
Laila is a Palestinian refugee living in Lebanon. She and her family escaped the immediate danger of violent conflict, but now as refugees they are struggling to make ends meet.
As the freezing conditions of winter set in, she explains: “Winter is a very difficult time. You have nowhere to go from the cold. I can’t afford food and fuel on the same day. We have to alternate and skip meals every other day.”
That’s why Laila went to CAFOD-funded local experts Najdeh for help. They were able to provide the support she needs to keep her family safe and warm. This makes a significant difference to Laila, as she says, “My mind feels at ease when I have fuel.”
Like so many of us, Laila still longs for true peace. When asked what her message for the world would be, she replies:
“For the war to stop, for the people to live in peace and have everything they need.”
