Omar’s faith remains strong despite the challenges he faces in a refugee camp in Lebanon

O Lord, rouse up your might, O Lord, come to our help.
PSALM 79:2

We all have times when we feel like we have nowhere to turn. When we feel like we have been abandoned and the difficulties we face seem insurmountable. In today’s psalm, the Psalmist cries out to God for help in words that resonate with this feeling. He calls upon God to come to his aid.

For Omar, a refugee in Lebanon, life has been very difficult. He is no longer able to work, due to poor health, and although his wife works to clean houses, they struggle to afford the food, fuel and other essentials that they need. This is where CAFOD-funded local experts Najdeh come in. They support Omar and others in the camp to keep their families safe and warm.

Through it all, Omar’s faith remains strong.

“God the Almighty will help you and give you strength. So, one should not despair of God’s mercy. God’s mercy is vast. He always sends someone eventually and the Good Samaritans are many. God never forgets anyone.”

God does not abandon us in times of difficulty. God hears all who cry out to him. Let us also open our ears to the cry of those who are in need, despite doing all that they can to build a better future for themselves and their families.

May these cries move us to take action, show love for our neighbour and to play our part in working towards the world God intends for us all.

Advent prayer

Saving God,
hear us when we cry out to you.
Fill us with your compassion
and move us to respond with love
to all our neighbours.
Amen.
